MI: Heikinpäivä

The annual Heikinpäivä celebration’s themes are taken from Finnish folk saying associated with the name day for Heikki (Henrik’s day — 19 January).

Events span January 10 through February 1 in Hancock and surrounding area.

TODAY:

10 a.m. – 3 p.m. — Tori Market, FAHC

10 a.m. – 2 p.m.  — Vipukelkka (Whipsled), kicksleds, and plenty of outdoor fun! Quincy Green.

11 a.m. – Parade, downtown Hancock. Line up at La Cantina restaurant at 10:30 a.m. Prizes.

Following parade — Wife-carrying, kicksled races, hobbyhorses, Quincy Green. Prizes.

Following parade — Finnish-style boat reception – a Finnish-American Folk School project,  Risto’s Hardware, Hancock.

1 p.m. — “Reindeer Herding Past and Present” talk by Antti Pätsi of Finland, Chapel of St. Mathew, Hancock.

3 p.m. — Polar Bear Dive, Hancock waterfront. Sponsored by Phi Kappa Tau fraternity.

3 p.m. — Reception for “Animal Life – Art from the Kalevala” Community Arts Center, Hancock.

7 p.m. — Heikinpäivä iltamat (hors d’oeuvres, dance), Finnish American Heritage Center. $15 per person.
