Heikinpäivä is a beloved Finnish-American winter festival in Hancock, Michigan, celebrating heritage, creativity, community, and plenty of sisu. Events span several weeks and culminate in a full festival weekend.

🎨 Arts, Crafts & Learning

  • Snowflake Challenge (Now–Feb 14)
    Sew a unique snowflake design using antique hand-crank sewing machines. All ages welcome; prizes awarded.

  • Finnish Language Beginner & Refresher Course (Jan 7–Feb 11)
    Six-week evening course exploring Finnish language fundamentals.

  • Inkle Band Weaving (Jan 13 & 20)
    Hands-on fiber arts workshop creating traditional woven bands.

  • Chip Carving Workshop (Jan 16)
    A full-day woodcarving class focused on traditional decorative techniques.

🎶 Family & Cultural Events

  • Hobbyhorse Hoedown (Jan 16)
    A family fun night featuring hobby horse games, Finnish dance, and music.

  • Club Finndingo: “Fallen Leaves” Film Night (Jan 23)
    Dinner and a screening of Aki Kaurismäki’s acclaimed film at the Calumet Theatre.

⛄ Snow Sculpting Invitational (Jan 23–25)

  • Professional and community snow sculptors compete on the Quincy Green.

  • Includes extended Tori markets, food vendors, and a community snowman-building contest.

  • Free and open to the public; winners announced Sunday afternoon.

🎉 Heikinpäivä Festival Day – Saturday, Jan 24

  • Tori Markets (10am–3pm) at the Finnish American Heritage Center & United Methodist Church

  • Parade (11am) along Quincy Street

  • Post-Parade Outdoor Festivities
    Passing of the Finno-Ugric Tsirk, Bear Spiral ceremony, wife-carrying contest, and kicksled races

  • The Magic of Sauna Textiles (1:30pm)
    Free cultural talk on sauna clothing and tradition

  • Polar Plunge (1–3pm)
    Take the icy leap and warm up with sauna sessions afterward

  • A Finno-Ugric World Tour Presentation by Gage Keränen
    Hear about Young Leaders Board member Gage’s travels through Latvia, Estonia, and Finland and learn about the people and cultures that thrive there
  • Curling Demonstration (2–4pm)
    Learn about this winter sport at Small Craft’s outdoor pavilion

  • Art Opening: “Animal Life – Art from the Kalevala” (2:30–4pm)

  • Iltamat Evening Dance (7–10pm)
    Traditional social dancing with food and raffle

  • Takka Flow Yoga (Jan 25)
    Yoga and sauna experience at Takka Sauna – Portage

  • Sauna Stories Oral History Project (Jan 25–30)

    Self-guided tour of unique saunas throughout the Keweenaw
