Finland is internationally recognized for its contributions to the arts and design fields, and that legacy continues through Finnish and Finnish-American painters, photographers, sculptors, ceramic artists, weavers, woodworkers, illustrators, designers, and other creative makers across North America.

Finlandia Foundation National’s Artist of the Year program celebrates one outstanding artist whose work reflects the richness and diversity of Finnish culture and creativity. Throughout their appointment, the Artist of the Year shares their work with communities across the country through exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and special appearances—including opportunities at the Finlandia Art Gallery in Hancock, Michigan. The program honors artistic excellence while fostering cultural exchange, inspiring creativity, and strengthening connections within the Finnish-American community.

Artist of the Year 2026-2027

Arno Rafael Minkkinen

Born in Helsinki and shaped between Finland and the United States, Arno Minkkinen has spent a lifetime exploring identity, place, and the human connection to nature. A pioneer of the photographic self-portrait, he has redefined the medium through work that is at once deeply personal and universally resonant.

Working without assistants or digital manipulation, Minkkinen has pushed the boundaries of photographic art through a philosophy of “pure photography,” creating images that correspond exactly to the reality before the lens. Using his own body as both subject and instrument, his photographs—born from imagination, patience, and physical endurance—invite viewers to experience the world with a renewed sense of wonder and immediacy.

His work is represented by Edwynn Houk Gallery in New York, Willas Contemporary in Stockholm, and galleries in Paris, Berlin, Torino, Brussels, and Beijing. It is also held in the permanent collections of many of the world’s leading museums, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Finnish National Gallery.

In addition to his celebrated artistic career, Minkkinen has made an enduring impact as an educator. He is Professor Emeritus of Art at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, former Professor and Docent at Aalto University in Helsinki, and former Assistant Professor of Photography at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Wagner College and his Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design.

His distinguished career has been recognized with numerous honors, including Finland’s Pro Finlandia Medal during the centennial of Finnish independence, the Order of the Lion of Finland, First Class, a John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship, the Lucie Award for Artistic Achievement at Carnegie Hall, and recognition as Honored Educator by the Society for Photographic Education. Most recently, he received the prestigious William Klein Prize from the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.

Throughout his life and career, Arno Minkkinen has built a bridge between Finland and the United States, carrying forward a distinctly Finnish perspective while helping shape the global language of contemporary photography. His work embodies creativity, resilience, and authenticity—qualities that continue to inspire artists, students, and audiences around the world.

Väinö Kola

Väinö Kola, a Finnish-born painter, now resides on the remote island of Deer Isle, Maine. After earning his B.F.A. from Massachusetts College of Art and M.F.A. from Yale University, Kola spent 26 years teaching art at Wheaton College before dedicating himself to painting full-time. His works, often inspired by natural landscapes and characterized by textured, almost pointillist brushwork, are featured in over forty museum and corporate collections across the U.S. and Europe.
