Alex Jokipii, a native of Escanaba, Michigan, and principal trumpet player with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, will play the world premiere performance of a trumpet concerto by Finnish composer Jaakko Kuusisto in a November 11 concert of the Marquette Symphony Orchestra.
Cook & Eat committee member Sandra Nelson Miller and Finnish Nordic Northwest member Pirjo Schulbach will lead the class in making the traditional Christmas cookies Honungsbatar (Swedish Honeyboats) and Joulutortut (Finnish Stars.) As an added bonus they will prepare glogg, using the recipe which won Nordic Northwest’s glogg competition last season.
The program salutes Finland's 100th Independence Day by opening with the playing of Finlandia, followed by Tchaikovsky’s thematically rich and brilliantly orchestrated Symphony No. 3 and The Grieg Piano Concerto. The program is repeated on Sunday the 19th.
