Finnish Center at Saima Park Pulla Baking Workshop

May 4 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

Welcome to Bake NISU or PULLA at Saima Park

JoinFinland native Saija Laurla on Sunday, May 4, from 10am to 1pm, to bake thistraditional Finnish sweet bread.

Thereis a saying in Finland: A loved child has many names. This most certainlyapplies to our loved coffee bread.

Nowadays, the whole of Finland calls this soft cardamom bread with thename “pulla”.  We spice this treat with caramel, vanillacream, pistachio, almond butter, strawberry jam… you name it, and all of itis called pulla.  But there is a western regional dialect where thisdelicacy is still called “nisu”. And other dialects call it”venhänen”.

Forsome, “nisu” is the braided version of this delicacy. Others like to keepit to its original vocabulary form of a “breast – nisä”, whenit’s round and looks like an American dinner roll.

Butbelieve it or not, the name is just as important to cherish as the product. So,whichever name you are using, please continue, and come bake it.

Weare going to bake the dough at the Finnish Center at Saima Park, and makeeither pulla or nisu. If we get enough interest in the cinnamony-cousin of thepulla/nisu, we will even bake korvapuusti! Let us know if you would liketo make pulla/nisu or korvapuusti, and we will arrange it.

The fee for the workshop is $25 for FCSP membersand $30 for others. Max attendance for this clinic is 50. To sign up,email finnishcenter@yahoo.com or call 978-407-9690.
