SUPPORT THE WINTER WAR MEMORIAL IN HELSINKI
By Ossi Rahkonen
The Winter War Memorial In Helsinki is scheduled to be dedicated by Finland’s President Sauli Niinistö on November 30, 2017, the Centennial of Finland’s Independence.
Located at the Kasarmitori Square, across from the Finnish Ministry of Defence, the sculpture is a monumental tribute titled, He Who Brings the Light by Pekka Kauhanen.
The foundation stone was laid on March 13, 2015, on the 75th Anniversary ofending The Winter War, an epic battle for the independence of Finland.
The Winter War Memorial, costing about $1.5 million, will be funded in equal shares by the Finnish Government, City of Helsinki and through private donations to the Winter War Association (WWA). The Government and the City of Helsinki have fully funded their share, but there is a gap of about $170,000 in private donations to WWA.
Finlandia Foundation is a corporate member of the WWA and has agreed to function as fiscal agent for its fundraising in the United States. The WWA had hoped that not only war veterans living in the U.S. but others supportive of this struggle would donate to this worthy cause.
Individuals donating 10,000 euros (equivalent of about $11,000) or more, and corporate donors contributing 30,000 euros (about $33,000) or more will have their names inscribed on the wall of the Ministry of Defence facing the Winter War Memorial. There have been quite a number of donations of this size in Finland, showing how strongly the donors feel that the Memorial needs to be completed.
I sincerely hope that we can show that the support is equally strong on this side of the Atlantic.
