SUMMARY:FAHC Folk School: Are you Sharp? Sharpening Basics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Are you Sharp? Sharpening Basics with Alex Yerks\nFriday\, May 16\, 202510am-5pm ETInstructor: Alex YerksLocation: Finnish American Folk School Wood ShopSkyline Commons room 102Class fee: $85Materials fee: $25 paid directly to instructorCLICK HERE TO REGISTERLast day to register May 8 or when sold outQuestions? Email clare.zuraw@finlandiafoundation.orgwww.finnishamericanfolkschool.com \n \nSharp tools are a must if you want to carve safely and efficiently. Sharpening is also one of the last things on a craftsperson’s priorities. \n“It’s the dull knife that cuts you.” \nI always like to think it cuts you in many ways. For one a dull knife takes a lot more force behind the blade to make a cut\, and when you’re pushing too hard accidents can happen. But a dull knife cuts into your carving time. It slows the process down\, makes it frustrating\, and using a sharp tool should make you feel good. \nLearning tools and techniques of carving is only half the battle. To be a good carver you must also be a good sharpener. Most people beginning their carving journey think they know what “sharp” is but arrive at class surprised that their tools can slice paper but are still difficult to carve with. These tools need some care. \nIn this class you will learn to sharpen an edge to precision sharpness. Learn how to tell when a tool needs attention\, or how to raise a burr\, or even how to build your own low cost sharpening system. You will leave this class with the confidence to tackle any sharpening chore no matter what the tool is. \nThis is the perfect class if you have had a fear of sharpening. One of the highlights of the course is the legendary Tormek Swedish sharpening system. Learn to grind edges on a slow moving\, wet wheel and have access to their really handy jigs that speed up edge maintenance and tool tune ups. \nYou will also learn how to make your own simple DIY sharpening kit (included in material fee). \n\nWood strop (one side\, other side is a sand paper block with rubber bands)\nWood dowel strop\nSet of wet and dry sandpaper grits\nStropping compound \n\nStudents are asked to bring any tools they are interested in sharpening\, as well as any type of sharpening gear they have in the workshop or kitchen. \nIt’s highly recommended that students in the weekend spoon carving workshop also take this class regardless of your skill level. This will ensure that you will be sharp and ready for spoon class on the weekend.   \nThis class is open to anyone interested in sharpening regardless if you are taking the weekend class or not. If you have a kitchen knife\, garden pruners\, or even your scissors this will be a great class for you.

SUMMARY:Finnish Center at Saima Park Pulla Baking Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Bake NISU or PULLA at Saima Park \nJoinFinland native Saija Laurla on Sunday\, May 4\, from 10am to 1pm\, to bake thistraditional Finnish sweet bread.   \nThereis a saying in Finland: A loved child has many names. This most certainlyapplies to our loved coffee bread.  \n \nNowadays\,the whole of Finland calls this soft cardamom bread with thename “pulla”.  We spice this treat with caramel\, vanillacream\, pistachio\, almond butter\, strawberry jam… you name it\, and all of itis called pulla.  But there is a western regional dialect where thisdelicacy is still called “nisu”. And other dialects call it”venhänen”.  \nForsome\, “nisu” is the braided version of this delicacy. Others like to keepit to its original vocabulary form of a “breast – nisä”\, whenit’s round and looks like an American dinner roll.  \nButbelieve it or not\, the name is just as important to cherish as the product. So\,whichever name you are using\, please continue\, and come bake it. \nWeare going to bake the dough at the Finnish Center at Saima Park\, and makeeither pulla or nisu. If we get enough interest in the cinnamony-cousin of thepulla/nisu\, we will even bake korvapuusti! Let us know if you would liketo make pulla/nisu or korvapuusti\, and we will arrange it. \n \nThe fee for the workshop is $25 for FCSP membersand $30 for others. Max attendance for this clinic is 50. To sign up\,email finnishcenter@yahoo.com or call 978-407-9690.
