An emeritus professor of History at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan, Jon Saari has travelled widely and lived in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China while researching and teaching modern Chinese history, third world history, historiography, and Finnish immigration.

He took a leading part in designing the cultural program for the Marquette FinnFests in 1996 and 2005, and wrote a comprehensive history of Finlandia Foundation National (2003, 2010).

Saari shares a second home on a mountain farm in Austria with his Austrian wife of 50+ years and their two sons, and three grandchildren.
