Satu Mikkola was born and educated in Finland with a degree in pharmacy. With her husband and three children, she moved to Portugal and then later to the United States, where she has lived since 1978. She has worked in the sales and marketing field in both Europe and the United States.
She has been actively involved in numerous Finnish-American organizations and has served on the board of the Finnish-American Chamber of Commerce of the Northwest, FinnFest USA, Portland Finnish School, Messiah Lutheran Church, FF Seattle Chapter; as a Vice President of FinnFest USA ’95; as an alternate to the Vice Speaker/USA and Latin America of Finnish Expatriate Parliament; as a founder and co-founder of FF Columbia Pacific Chapter, Finlandia Music & Art Festival and Finlandia Music Camp.
She was treasurer of Finlandia Foundation National for six years and for the past several years has served as a coordinator of the Performer of the Year program. As a committed advocate of kantele, the traditional Finnish instrument, she continues to instruct, coordinate and promote active kantele groups she has founded in the Pacific Northwest. The groups have performed in numerous venues in the U.S. and Canada and have toured in Finland.
In 2011 Mikkola was awarded the insignia of the Knight of the Order of the Lion of Finland.
